Seth Asa: Music

III-i The Weather

(Seth Asa)
March 30, 2009
This song wrote itself during the "While Hannah Was Away" sessions. It started as a song about a lack of smalltalk and grew into a song about a dream I had in college about the end of the world... which became a metaphor for letting go of the things we carry around inside that destroy us if we don't confront them and how it's like passing through a storm to find the light again.

* * *
the weather

it's never about the weather
learning to tell the time of year
precipitate a connection, imitate a reflection...
somewhere, here or there
they're calling out to the sunshine
looking to part the clouds
trying to make a connection, investigate an invention
somewhere out there now

the lights are on but it's hollow
sights are home but they're old
eyes are wide but they're drier
fire's high but it's cold

vagrant papers flap and float away like evening ghosts
lamps are lit but everything is closed
every footstep echoes loud and only time will turn them down
castles into stepping stones,
stories, and legends:
myths that we can't seem to forgive...
heroes burned beneath the street kiss the soles of lesser feet:
ask them what's it like to win

every meter's taken
tickets have all been sold
promised land is forsaken
card's a king but it folds

cross off one more guarantee the ceiling's looking thin...
cradle the world, give it a little spin
see the seasons moving faster, tired skies in tiny tatters
here comes the rain again

and listening feels like silence
color is black and white
nothing here is breathing,
the windows all shut tight
the sea is a temper-tantrum
the skies are getting dark
yelling sounds like nothing
and nothing's yelling "stop"

everything is quiet...
time is standing still
a moment that was missed, an unforgotton kiss...
light begins to spill
ice is aging to water
stone is sifting into dirt
something makes a connection here and there a reflection
letting go...
